This document is the 2013 program of the two-day orientation workshop for new Teaching Fellows offered every year at the end of August by the departments of modern languages at Columbia University. It should be said that we started out with a 3-day program where a number of sessions were devoted to teaching the four skills and culture as well as teaching with videos. The problem with the three-day format was that there was too much to digest in a very short time and the graduate students felt overwhelmed. The pared-down version of the workshop concentrates on the essential toolkit TF’s need in order to “survive” the first few days of the semester before they start attending a semester-long pedagogy seminar in their respective departments.
This short document sums up the goals of a shock class and offers some advice to shock-class teachers.
This is the list of questions future Teaching Fellows are asked to consider ahead of the Orientation Workshop
